Abstract

On July 11, 1873 the German schooner “R.J. Robertson” stranded at the coral reefs off Miyakojima. Some of the crew was saved and nursed by the inhabitants of the island. When the German emperor Wilhelm I. heard of the heartful treatment of the German crew by the island people, by chancelor Bismarck he ordered the German gunboat “Zyklop” to errect a memorial-stone with an inscript on Miyakojima in march 1876. 60 years later, in November 1936, about ten days before Nov. 25:th when Japan signs the Anti-Comintern Pact with, a ceremony was organised to celebrate the anniversary of the errection of this memorial.

The paper discusses the background which led to the ceremony in 1936 with original historical materials such as a short movie, several photographs and postcards.

1873年6月11日、台風により独商船R.J. Robertson号が宮古島の珊瑚礁で沈没した。乗客の何人かは宮古島の住民の救助と治療により救われた。帝国首相ビスマルクが皇帝ヴィルヘルム一世に出来事を知らせると、ヴィルヘルムは独軍船チクロープ号に（博愛）記念碑を宮古島へ運ぶ命令を発した。60年後の1936年11月に宮古島の博愛記念碑でその記念式典が行われた。
